A new client with thick, naturally wavy hair came in this week with approximately 1″ of regrowth and chunky highlights done on the top of her head and underneath around her nape for when she wore her hair up.

A new base color one level lighter than what she previously had been wearing was chosen to soften her look and bring out her light brown eye color. After processing the new base color, a full head of small weaved highlights were done due to her hair’s thickness to brighten up the entire head and blend in the chunkier highlights on the top. Her color service was followed up with Olaplex for 15 minutes & a protein/moisture conditioner for 5 minutes.

At the styling chair, a leave-in color saver was applied followed by Aquage SeaExtend silkening oil treatment and straightening ultragel. Her hair was blown-dry straight and lightly flat ironed before finishing off her haircut dry with a “Clavicut” style. The Clavicut style can be tailored to face shape and hair type ~ worn straight, wavy or curly. The longest layers of this cut graze the clavicle and this collarbone-skimming style is fast becoming the hairstyle of choice for all ages due to its functionality and ease. With this style, she will be able to wear her hair down without it weighing her down and her up-do styles will still be very romantic.

Looking for a haircut or color change? Don’t know if the “Clavicut” is for you? Let me help you decide! Contact me today to help you with your choice of a new style or hair color to help you look and feel the best you can now! ~ Denise Zingale Travis (216) 292-4247

Color & Haircut Makeover for over 60

Color & haircut by, Denise Zingale Travis / D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon (216) 292-HAIR (4247)

This is a client who is a working professional and travel enthusiast. She wanted to grow her hair out “one last time” to see how it would look. The day came and she had enough of her long hair and told me to do anything I wanted! Well … it did come with some requests…. She ask me to leave it long enough to to pull it up as well a have versatility and style when she wore it down and she wanted her hairline grey to be minimized so as not to show within a few weeks of growing out. I began with her color – two inches around her face was zig-zagged out and a shade lighter than the rest of her base color that I use on the rest of her head was applied to minimize her hairline grey showing to quickly. A full head of highlights then was done to give her a dimensional, brighter look and add body to her fine hair. For her haircut, I decided that a combination of a  “Lob” & “Swag” would be the desired look for her. Enough length was removed and layers were added to still allow for her hair to be styled up as well as worn down straight or curled. Light “curtain” bangs softened her forehead. (not shown).

Below are the before & afters. (Click on picture for a larger view)

Steps:

1. Divide hair at the crown of the head into two even sections, then tie into a simple knot.

2. Add hair to each side of the knot (as you would doing a french braid) then tie into another knot below the first.

3. Repeat previous step for a third section, pulling hair from each side.

4. Use the remaining amount of hair for the fourth and final knot.

5. Fasten the bottom with an elastic band. You can either leave the style as a low ponytail or (6) tuck the hair up and underneath the knots with bobby pins to create an updo.

Color Enhancement ~ Richer, Shinier Hair

This is a client who came in with natural “mousy” brown hair color. She wanted it to “pop”, look richer, healthier, shinier AND not have a commitment to coloring it regularly. I did a full head, fine low-lighting technique with a dark, chocolate red brown color and added Olaplex to her color service. Olaplex is a professional product that reconnects the broken disulfide sulfur bonds in the hair that are broken during chemical services. Olaplex is free of silicone, sulfates, phthalates, DEA, aldehydes, & gluten. After coloring and the Olaplex “after treatments” (#2 & #3), it was time to taking off approximately 2 inches help give her hair a nice line again. Here are the beautiful results! Color Make-over: Brass to Blonde

This is a new client that came in asking me for color only to minimize her grey regrowth in the front – get rid of some of the “brassy” color – and have more natural brighter blonde look. To minimize her regrowth in the front, I zig-zagged a color 1 level lighter at the base regrowth than what I used on the rest of her head to cover her grey. Baby-lights where then foiled in half her head to brighten her blonde up. Results below with no haircut or “styling”.

To apply them, hold the tattoo design-side-down against your hair, just like you would apply a temporary tattoo on your skin. Also, hair tattoo’s show up better on straight hair since the smooth surface prevents them from becoming distorted. Then, dab the tattoo with a damp cotton ball and then peel off the paper. How to Tell If Short Hair Will Look Good on You

All you need is a ruler and a pencil ~
By: Denise Zingale Travis / D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon (216) 292-HAIR (4247)

It is a question hairstylists and reliable friends are often asked; “do you think short hair would look good on me?” Thanks to celebrities recently liberating their locks with crops, bobs and lobs, that question gets asked more often than not.

Well the question of flattery has a short answer: The 2.25″ (5.5cm) rule.

The magic measurement was discovered by hairstylist, John Frieda and it is all about the angles. The angle of the jaw bone determines whether or not someone would look best with short hair or long hair. It is said the result is a trusted, easy and exact measurement that can indicated whether a face (any face) is suited to short or long hair.

Can you wear shor hair example1

To try it, position a pencil or pen under your chin horizontally and then place a ruler under your ear, vertically. Take your measurement from the intersection of the pencil and ruler. Less than 2.25″ and you could  look amazing with short hair, and if it’s anything more long locks will be the most flattering choice for you.

Can you wear short hair exampleThis example works well well with Michelle Williams and Kim Kardashian (pictured), and when you think of other examples such as Audrey Hepburn next to Sarah Jessica Parker it becomes very clear.

Hairstyles for Men

Written by: Denise Zingale Date of published: . Posted in Blow-dry Hairstyling, fall hairstyles, Fashion, hair loss, hair texture, make-overs, Men's Hair, Men's Styles, News, Publications, Tips, Uncategorized

Even though trends and tastes have changed in the past decade, many gents are still choosing to wear their hair in  more classic styles. The haircuts look crisp and sharp. A lot of men are also sporting a full beard with these styles, which creates a dramatic contrast and adds to the disjointed effect created by cutting the sides tight.

Although I have seen a slight decline in men coloring their hair, coloring doesn’t need to be so dramatic. There are many products, colors and techniques that can be used to lighten/darken the hair or just add tone. Men could definitely experiment with color more, even if it’s only slightly lightening the hair to give it a sun-kissed appearance or using highlights/low-lights to add texture, definition, or grey blend a cut at key areas.

As men mature, so does their style. That often comes with life experience and a deeper understanding of who you are. There are many different hairstyles men can wear these days; but I do see though the men’s looks continuing to remain more traditional and grounded by timeless cuts & styles.

The “SWAG”

Written by: Denise Zingale Date of published: . Posted in make-overs, News, Publications, Tips, Uncategorized

By: Denise Zingale Travis, D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon (216) 292-HAIR (4247)

Fall is one of the best times of year to switch up your look with a new haircut. The hottest cut going strong is the Swag, which is short for Swingy-Shag. This is a fun take on the 70’s shag cut, and is a very versatile trend right now on any age.

The Swag cut embraces natural texture while being fun & playful & “choppy” layers through the crown, and a more heavy weight line on the perimeter. This cut also plays well with fringe, and you can see from these pictures that the length of the cut can vary from shoulder length down to mid-chest.

You can opt to wear a center part with “curtain bangs” that frame the face nicely, or opt for a deep side parting and a side-swept bang. Either way the cut is youthful and perfect for a Fall transformation on any age.

Swag4To achieve this look, depending on your hair texture, a razor may be used or a slithering technique with scissors to cut the layers and fringe, for a more textured appearance, and to lighten the hair so it has that swingy bounce we are looking for. Once you have the Swag cut, keep your styling loose looking by prepping your hair with professional only hair products specifically recommended for your hair type & texture and then wrapping large sections of hair around a curling wand, for the perfect loose waves.

The “SWAG” is a versatile style and hair color enhances this trend. Fall is a great time to rejuvenate you and your look. Welcome Autumn! Fall Hair Care

Written by: Denise Zingale Date of published: . Posted in make-overs, News, Publications, Tips, Uncategorized

By: Denise Zingale Travis, D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon (216) 292-HAIR (4247)

Autumn Hair Picture2As we begin a new season ~ Autumn rolls in grabbing our attention with exquisitely colorful leaves, brisk cool air and fabulous chilly weather fashions…. Unfortunately along with the beauty of the season comes unruly, lackluster, dry hair and scalp.

After summer hair care should start immediately to make sure your tresses welcome the cooler season looking shiny, bouncy, soft and restored. “Lightweight” products are great for spring and summer with the added humidity in the air, but a cooler climate calls for thicker ingredients that nourish & replenish hair. Your hair may seem drier as you increase the use of central heating throughout the winter & conditioning is the key. Conditioner such as Aquage SeaExtend conditioners and treatments or ABBA Moisture Conditioner helps to close the cuticle and seal in moisture.

Unless you live in an environmentally friendly city year round, the beginning of autumn is the perfect time to revise and update your hair care regimen. Call Denise at (216) 292-HAIR (4247) to have your personal regimen reviewed and updated today!

Solutions for Fine, Thin, Wiry, Frizzy Hair

Written by: Denise Zingale Date of published: . Posted in Blow-dry Hairstyling, Fashion, Hair Color, hair loss, hair texture, make-overs, Publications, thinning hair, Tips, Uncategorized, Women's Hairstyles

By: Denise Zingale Travis, Permanent Waving Specialist ~ D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon (216) 292-HAIR (4247)

Hair changes every 5 to 7 years. As our body ages, we see changes in our hair texture. The hair of a newborn is very soft and fine. The diameter of the hair thickens as we enter childhood and early adolescence. As we age and move into adulthood and older, usually beginning in our 40’s and 50’s, the hair begins to change texture again, becoming “finer” or “thinner” and/or “wiry” or “frizzy.” Add to the causes of your hair texture changing, hormonal imbalances, medications, diet, and genetics. So what can you do? First, get your hormones checked. Hormones influence your hair and texture in many ways since they are regulators of the body’s metabolism and its functions. Diet and medications can take a toll on hair so rule out any possible nutritional deficiencies that can cause dry, thinning, brittle hair or hair loss.

Next, get a GREAT (not just good) haircut! Work with an experienced hair professional to help you with your texture changes. Discuss your lifestyle and desired time commitment to your hair now. Seriously consider getting color, highlights, low-lights, or a permanent/body wave. One or a combination of these texture-changing services can help fine or thin hair look and feel fuller and “wiry” or “frizzy” hair look and feel more controlled and manageable.

On this client, she is just beginning to go grey but not ready (or wanting) full all over color. I have highlighted her hair with color to blend in the grey starting to come though. If your hair is straight, fine, limp and/or flat, a permanent/body wave can give you the texture and lift which boosts the overall volume of the hair to make it much easier to create today’s fashionable hairstyles as seen on this client here.

Seen here are the wrapping technique used, curl results and the finished style. (Click on the picture for larger view.)

IMG_20150529_134208186_HDRIMG_20150529_140420929_HDRIMG_20150529_154756220_HDRIMG_20150529_164111891_HDRIMG_20150529_164144428_HDR

For those who want the “undone”, “beach wave”, or “swag” look regularly  https://dmazsalon.com/the-swag/, you would be better off getting a body wave as opposed to using curling irons every day. Irons apply more direct heat, and daily use of them would produce more damage over time.

A few quick facts about permanent/body waves. Human hair is an extremely strong and versatile fiber. With an experienced stylist/perm specialist, they will evaluate your hair and determine the type of solution, rod size and wrapping technique. Proper care using only professionally recommended & bought at a salon haircare and regular maintenance can keep your “waves” lasting for months and styling time on your hair definitely minimized. The rewards of an easy-to-care-for style are great and having a permanent/body wave can make a world of difference between looking uninteresting or looking fashionably beautiful!

For more information and/or consultation if a permanent wave, body wave or a combination of other salon texture-changing services are for you!

Color & haircut by Denise Zingale Travis, D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon (216) 292-HAIR (4247)

Here is a client whose color is sun faded & cut has grown out longer than she likes now. She came in asking for her color to look a dimensional, rich copper brown and her cut/style updated for Fall.  Two different color formulas were used; one at the regrowth to lift and cover gray and one throughout the rest of the hair to deposit, tone & gloss. Bringing up her length helped her fine hair to look fuller and have style. Below are the before & afters.
