Winter Wellness for your Hair

From hat hair to static electricity, split ends to dry frizz, when winter weather hits, a bad hair day can last an entire season. Hair typically gets 25 percent dryer during the winter. Even if you live in a moderate climate, you’re still susceptible to hair-raising changes as the seasons pass.

The environment can have some of the most damaging effects on hair in both summer and winter, but in winter it’s often worse because people generally don’t take as many precautions to protect their hair. Sun exposure (which can be as intense on a ski slope as it is on a beach) combined with blustery winter wind as well as snow, rain, and icy cold (which makes hair brittle and dry) can all come together to create some very bad winter hair days.

Even if you spend most of your time indoors, winter is still your hair’s enemy. Indoor heating can be something akin to spending an entire afternoon under a hair dryer. Honestly, it’s not quite as dramatic as the damage would be from that, but it certainly gives you an idea of what indoor heating can do to your hair. No matter what’s causing your winter hair woes, it is a fact the hair tends to become dry faster and have more breakage in the winter.

Here are 5 simple nourishing, replenishing and protective steps you can take for winter hair wellness ~

1. Make sure you are equipped with a high quality, salon professional shampoo and conditioner. The right shampoo and conditioner at this time of the year will help repair, seal and smooth your hair. A good hair mask is highly recommended once to twice a week for severely damaged hair. Hair Masks are wonderful for winter stressed hair. Please note: Do not over use “Protein” treatments or conditioners. Actual protein treatments or conditioners help to reinforce weak hair but should only be used when professionally recommended. Over use of “protein” on the hair can cause buildup resulting in dry, brittle hair and breakage.

2. Avoid over-washing your hair in winter and in the shower. Try to wash it over the sink or tub with warm to cool water. The pressure of the shower head and the hot water causes the formation of tiny chinks in the surrounding cuticle which adds to the problems of hair dryness and breakage.

3. Towel-dry your hair very gently post shampooing and conditioning as aggressive rubbing roughs up the cuticle that can lead to breakage. Less friction results also in less frizzing!

4. Professionally prescribed styling products including Liquid Spell & Oi All-in-One Milk for men and women are a must to help protect the hair from thermal styling and the environment. “Layering” your hair products individually and combing each through thoroughly can help achieve added protection, control, texture, shine and reduce static. Professional hair products are not only recommended for men’s hair but for also softening and controlling beards!  If using a blow-dryer, direct warm (not hot) air from the down to encourage hair to lay flatter.

5. Plenty of water and good nutrition that incorporates small portions of all the key food groups such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources helps to nourish and protect hair. Taking a quality-grad multivitamin with essential B vitamins (B6, B12, folate), essential fatty acids and adequate minerals can help dry, weak hair prone to breakage in the winter. Read more here about the Top 10 herbs for hair growth & Your Diet, Your Hair.

Finally, use a Humidifier (moist air). Dry air from either climate conditions or working in a building that pumps air (hot or cold) in can result in lifeless, flat, dry, and flyaway hair. Regularly run a humidifier to help put moisture back into the air.

The haircare lines at D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon were very carefully chosen based on their proven ability to perform and give the best results with attention and respect for the environment using high-grade natural and organic ingredients. It would be a pleasure to prescribe for you a custom home regimen that would help give your hair the best health, shine, and control for your hair texture and type. 5 Reasons Not To Use Box Hair Color

Written by: Denise Zingale Date of published: . Posted in Environmental, Fashion, Hair Color, hair texture, Health and Wellness, News, Philanthropy, Publications, Tips, Uncategorized, Wellness, Women's Hairstyles

By: Denise Zingale / D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon (216) 292-HAIR (4247)

Box color is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.”

Chocolate hair color photo1) Box color has unpredictable results and does not condition the hair
Hairdressers are trained in the “laws of color”. We know what colors to mix to cancel out undesired “tones” in your hair and we know exactly what color your hair is when the color is processing, and when to take the color off to achieve your most desired result. Most box color will come with a “conditioning packet” for after you wash the color out. This “conditioning packet” contain petroleum based ingredients that coat your hair masking the dryness and damage from the box coloring process.

2) One Size Does Not Fit All
Box color is formulated so that everyone and anyone can use it, but not everyone’s hair type, porosity, condition or color is even remotely the same. Box colors are formulated with high amounts of pigment and developer, so that it is able to work on a lot of people. If you have already colored your hair previously, your processed hair is not going to require the same formula or developer.

3) Box Color Is Only ONE Color
Your regrowth will always need a different color formulation than the rest of your head and if you want some actual dimension that takes much more skill than an all over color application. You will not be able to achieve that with the one color present in a box. Hairdressers use nothing less than 2 different colors to mix your desired color – it’s always customized!

4) Box Color contains high levels of PPDs & Nitro dyes
Box colors contain high amounts of pigment, PPD (p- phenylenediamine) which form hair dyes on a chemical reaction and performed dyes, nitro-p-phenylenediamine which already are dyes and are added to achieve the intended shades along with a developer. Box color has an excessive amount of PPDs & nitro, which can cause skin sensitivities, allergies and be very damaging to the hair. They do not come out.

5) Box color & Henna contain Metallic Salts
There are still many box colors on the market today that use metallic salts, an ingredient used in box hair color since the 1800s. Metallic salts build up on the hair causing each time you use that box color or Henna (the supposed natural hair color) for your hair to darken past your desired result. Not to mention that if you ever want to change your hair color or go lighter, metallic salts can be difficult to remove for even the most experienced hairdresser. The problem with metallic dyes is that they don’t play well with others. You put any other type of hair color on your hair and you can have a chemical reaction happen such as heat, smoke, and burning hair. (Remember chemistry lab?)

6) That $10 Box Color Won’t Feel That Affordable After a $500 Color Correction
So you decided not to heed the 5 reasons above and you are now orange (“brassy”). This is often the color the hair will turn when coloring (especially lightening) with box color. Color correction starts at approximately $100.00 an hour so please do yourself a favor before you end up with this result; research, call and consult with a Professional Hairdresser. Quality, safe hair color will NEVER be found in a box on the market ~ your hair AND your wallet will thank you! For your personalized, private appointment with Denise, call: tel:(216) 292-4247

Men’s Beard & Facial Hair Trends

Written by: Denise Zingale Date of published: . Posted in Men's Hair, Men's Styles, News, Tips, Uncategorized

It is clear that while all men are not clamoring to get clean shaven – beards are definitely are in! By: Denise Zingale / D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon (216) 292-HAIR (4247)

Beard trends 2016 1The Shorter Long Beard
Beards of bushiness are gone. Instead, we see a calmer, more controlled version. The shape of the shorter take on the long beard follows the face’s shape; also, the lines on the cheek are sharp in order to contrast with the full, natural and unpredictable growth below. Finally, the bottom of the beard lies up to two inches below the chin.
Who’s it For? This style works best if you have extensive facial hair growth. It is a good way of concealing a smaller chin, a double chin or elongating a rounder face – but if you have a longer face, choose a beard that’s a bit shorter.
How to Get It: Patience primarily, because as the longest of the facial hair styles on this list it could take few months to grow to the required length. Make sure that during this time, you don’t remove any weight or hair from the interior of the beard (especially underneath between the chin and neck). It’s this hair that will eventually form the foundations and support the full beard. Only trim the lines on the cheeks if they are growing too high up. Once you’ve grown your beard and shaped it to suit your face, care is the key. Use a moisturizing shampoo to help the beard retain its moisture, otherwise it could flake and cause beard dandruff. Also, while damp, run an argan oil through it with your hands to keep it moist. For a more thorough styling, and to iron out any kinks, use a paste. Apply a hair paste to your damp beard and blow dry on low-medium power while brushing to relax the beard’s hairs. Not only will this make your beard appear longer, but it will also make it easier to shape and style.

Beard trends 2016 2

The Short Beard
A shorter beard is a versatile look that can slip in with most hairstyles, and appear smart and rugged at the same time. The shape follows the face’s angles, and the beard is kept close to the cheeks, with the hair measuring around 1cm long. As the beard approaches the chin, it is left ever so slightly longer, in order to elongate the face and give the beard a better, more masculine shape.
Who’s It For? Good growers since you will still need ample coverage to avoid any patches and uneven lines. In terms of face shape, this style is achievable and adaptable, one we can see plenty of men wearing.
How to Get It: It shouldn’t take much longer than a month to lay the foundations for this style. It does, however, require upkeep once full grown. You will need regular trims, done either by your stylist or at home with a set of good trimmers. You will also need to keep your skin in good condition by exfoliating and moisturizing around the beard and using an argan oil to keep the hairs hydrated. Note: For extra definition above the cheeks, use a set of detailers to get a nice sharp line.

beard trend 2016 mustasche

The Mustache
Is making a bit of a return and the decision isn’t so much whether to wear one, but how to wear it. Leaving your hair to grow more pronounced on the upper lip provides contrast and shape, whether you choose to wear it with an otherwise clean shaven face or a well-groomed beard.
Who’s it For? Provided you have the wherewithal to grow one, and the patience to groom it, a mustache suits most men. There are plenty of variations so you can tweak yours to your taste. Do though think about whether a mustache fits with your personal style before committing: A mustache is going to work better with your look if you tend to dress yourself quite smartly rather than wearing active wear or fitness wear daily.
How to Get It: The best way to grow a mustache is simply to leaving it alone. Do not trim above the lip; train the hairs out to either side of the vertical groove between the base of the nose and the border of the upper lip. Use a mustache comb to straighten it out every now and then, and apply a wax to keep it in shape.

beard trend 2016 Stubble

Stubble
Follicly challenged in the face area? Fear not. This designer stubble – the style of choice for discerning men, looks to continue to soar in popularity.
Who’s It For? Anyone who can’t because of genetics or workplace-related reasons, or doesn’t want to, grow a beard. Stubble also suits a fuller face and stops it from looking so round as shadow and definition are created by the lines shaven in. It is versatile and won’t dictate your hairstyle as much as having an actual beard would.
How To Get It: Allow facial hair to grow up until it gets itchy. Note where your hair growth begins, ends, is patchy or uneven. Use the lines created by your bone structure to help guide where you want to keep the stubble and wet shave everything else. Use a good quality safety razor for the cheek lines. When shaving down the stubble to the desired length, use a set of beard trimmers and make sure to sanitize the guards and the actual razor head after use, otherwise it could pick up bacteria and cause irritation and/or infection.
Alternatively – and especially if you suffer from shaving rash – try a short stubble beard without lining, but tapering instead. This suits guys that have a chiseled face which needs softening. Fade the neck and cheeks in on a shorter grade to soften the whole of face. If you do swap wet shaving for a short stubble beard, remember to care for your skin. Use an exfoliator to prevent ingrown hairs and follow with a good light moisturizer worked into both the face and the stubble.

Beard trends 2016 Sideburns

Sideburns
Sideboards, side whiskers, mutton chops – whichever name you know them by, men are probably at a loss as to why they are on this list. But hear it is; It’s a classic. It is also just the ticket if you’re itching to lose the beard in favor of something less trite.
Who’s it For? Not everyone, obviously. But from a face shape suitability perspective, sideburns are pretty egalitarian. Sideburns suit most face shapes, and are especially good for longer faces as they broaden the appearance of the face.
How to Get It: As ever, it’s about growth: about two weeks to be exact. Once you’ve got some decent coverage, shave your face and neck, taking care to leave a good bit of room around your sideburns. Trim your burns to the desired length and thickness (the thickness of your sideburns should be consistent with the rest of your hair) and either taper them or give them a clean bottom edge. The length of the sideburns should reflect how subtle or extreme you want the effect to be. Reference your choice of length with a feature on the face such as the lip line or jaw line. Small clippers, or a detailer, are good for maintaining the length as the blade is small but sharp and ideal for outlining.

Lavender Lemonade for Help with Menopause & More!

Written by: Denise Zingale Date of published: . Posted in Diet, Health and Wellness, News, Nutrition, Publications, Tips, Uncategorized, Wellness

By, Denise Zingale / D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon (216) 292-4247

The smell of lavender. Calming, soothing and beautifully fragrant. This is a popular flower and essential oil that is commonly found in most households. Diffusing lavender in the evening is a perfect way to unwind from a busy day, and especially before bed, can have an overall calming effect, relieve nervous tension and can help aid in sleep.

Lavender is particularly great for women who are suffering from PMS or going through menopause. The calming scent of lavender helps to support the nervous system which can help relieve tension, stress or anxiety to help minimize hair loss. It also has estrogenic properties, which can support healing from low estrogen, support a good nights rest or bring balance during menopause. Lavender also has a positive effect in relieving headaches, migraines, and depression.

You can also gain the benefits of lavender by making this delicious lavender infused lemonade. Sip on this herbal elixir all day and feel the calming benefits this amazing herb has to offer.

Lavender Lemonade
Ingredients:
• 1 liter fresh spring water
• 2-3 springs fresh or dried lavender
• 2 lemons, juiced
• 1 tbsp raw organic honey or maple syrup
Directions: Add all ingredients into a large jug and let sit in the fridge for 1 hour to allow the lemon and lavender to infuse the water. Feel free to add less or more sweetener, depending on your preference. Sip and enjoy!

Color Make-over: Brass to Blonde

This is a new client that came in asking me for color only to minimize her grey regrowth in the front – get rid of some of the “brassy” color – and have more natural brighter blonde look. To minimize her regrowth in the front, I zig-zagged a color 1 level lighter at the base regrowth than what I used on the rest of her head to cover her grey. Baby-lights where then foiled in half her head to brighten her blonde up. Results below with no haircut or “styling”.

How to Tell If Short Hair Will Look Good on You

Written by: Denise Zingale Date of published: . Posted in fall hairstyles, Fashion, Hair Color, hair texture, make-overs, News, Perms / Body Waves, Publications, Spring hairstyles, Summer hairstyles, thinning hair, Tips, Uncategorized, Women's Hairstyles

All you need is a ruler and a pencil ~
By: Denise Zingale Travis / D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon (216) 292-HAIR (4247)

It is a question hairstylists and reliable friends are often asked; “do you think short hair would look good on me?” Thanks to celebrities recently liberating their locks with crops, bobs and lobs, that question gets asked more often than not.

Well the question of flattery has a short answer: The 2.25″ (5.5cm) rule.

The magic measurement was discovered by hairstylist, John Frieda and it is all about the angles. The angle of the jaw bone determines whether or not someone would look best with short hair or long hair. It is said the result is a trusted, easy and exact measurement that can indicated whether a face (any face) is suited to short or long hair.

Can you wear shor hair example1

To try it, position a pencil or pen under your chin horizontally and then place a ruler under your ear, vertically. Take your measurement from the intersection of the pencil and ruler. Less than 2.25″ and you could  look amazing with short hair, and if it’s anything more long locks will be the most flattering choice for you.

Can you wear short hair exampleThis example works well well with Michelle Williams and Kim Kardashian (pictured), and when you think of other examples such as Audrey Hepburn next to Sarah Jessica Parker it becomes very clear.

This is a great time of the year to rejuvenate you and your look. Contact me to help you in your choice of a new style to help you look and feel the best you can! ~ Denise Zingale Travis (216) 292-HAIR (4247).

Welcome Autumn! Fall Hair Care

Written by: Denise Zingale Date of published: . Posted in fall hairstyles, Hair Color, hair loss, hair texture, make-overs, New Products, News, Publications, Tips, Uncategorized

By: Denise Zingale / D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon (216) 292-4247

Autumn Hair Picture2As we begin a new season ~ Autumn rolls in grabbing our attention with exquisitely colorful leaves, brisk cool air and fabulous chilly weather fashions…. Unfortunately along with the beauty of the season comes unruly, lackluster, dry hair and scalp.

After summer hair care should start immediately to make sure your tresses welcome the cooler season looking shiny, bouncy, soft and restored. “Lightweight” products are great for spring and summer with the added humidity in the air, but a cooler climate calls for thicker ingredients that nourish & replenish hair. Fall Color & Haircut Makeover!

Color & haircut by Denise Zingale Travis, D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon (216) 292-HAIR (4247)

Here is a client whose color is sun faded & cut has grown out longer than she likes now. She came in asking for her color to look a dimensional, rich copper brown and her cut/style updated for Fall.  Two different color formulas were used; one at the regrowth to lift and cover gray and one throughout the rest of the hair to deposit, tone & gloss. Bringing up her length helped her fine hair to look fuller and have style. Below are the before & afters.

Sometimes even professionally done color needs correction. Here is a client that came in to me asking for her hair to look more “natural” with highlights and wanting to get rid of the “orange” (brassy) color in her hair. She also wanted to keep her hair on the long side but wanted it to have some style. Below are the before & afters.

Foods that can help you stay hydrated

Learn how you can use a fork or spoon to help get the fluid you need on hot summer days
By: Denise Zingale, Hairdresser ~ EFT/Reiki Master Practitioner ~ CPT / Owner, D’MAZ Lifestyle Salon tel: (216) 292-4247

Think hydration – and you probably think water, the body’s essential fluid. But did you know you can eat your H2O too? That’s when you choose foods that are high in water content. Some varieties of fruit and veggies are more than 85 percent water. On hot summer days, these foods, along with other fluids can help you stay hydrated. And there’s a bonus – Water-rich fruits and veggies can also help replace key minerals (electrolytes) which your body sheds when you sweat.

Enjoy a thirst-quenching menu ~ When the temperature rises, make a splash in your daily diet with these tasty ideas:

Fruit & veggie salad

Super salads ~ Watermelon, oranges, tomatoes, cantaloupe, berries, celery and cucumbers salads are all flush with fluid. These water-rich foods make great low-calorie snacks too!

berry smoothie pictureBerry-delicious smoothies. Add berries — fresh or frozen — to low-fat milk, almond or coconut milk.

Summer salsa saladSummer salsas. These can be made from vegetables, fruits or a combination of both. Enjoy your favorite variety as a snack — dip into it with cut-up veggies or whole-grain pita chips. Or top grilled fish or chicken with it. Have a sweet tooth? Give orange or pineapple salsa a try.

Chilled Soups ~ You can serve these as a light meal – or as an appetizer or dessert. Here are three cool and soothing options:

gazpacho soup pictureGazpacho. A summertime favorite that’s typically rich in tomatoes, cucumber, onion, bell pepper and garlic.

vichyssoise soup imageVichyssoise. This creamy French classic is made with pureed potatoes and leeks. To keep it on the healthful side, use low-fat, low-sodium chicken broth. For an even creamier soup, stir in a little plain low-fat yogurt or low-fat sour cream.

Fruit Soup ImageFruit soups. Strawberries, raspberries and cantaloupe puree nicely.

frozen grapes & berries image

Frozen Nibbles. Freeze grapes or berries. Grab them for a quick and cold snack.

More hints on hydration ~
Perhaps you’re wondering, How much water do I need? Maybe you’ve heard it should be eight glasses a day. Actually, there’s no set amount that’s right for everyone.* Staying hydrated is important though so don’t wait until you are thirsty. Carry a refillable water bottle with you and sip from it throughout the day. (Be sure to wash your water bottle daily!)

Bored with the same old water supply? Give it a twist with one of these Fruit-Infused Waters you can make at home!

Remember, heat can be a hazard ~
To learn more about safety in hot weather, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov. You can also check the weather and heat index in your area and see heat advisories at www.weather.gov. In hot weather, do keep an especially close eye on older people, people with health conditions and young children and make sure they stay hydrated. They’re at the highest risk of heat-related illness.

Throwback Thursday: The Flat Iron

Written by: Denise Zingale Date of published: . Posted in News, Publications, Tips, Uncategorized

By: Denise Zingale Travis / D’MAZ Salon

A bad hair day for someone with curly, wavy, or somewhere-in-between hair can be a disaster. You can use sprays, mousse, gels and more to try to tame it, but sometimes you just need to bring out the big guns and show your hair who is boss. Many well-kept individuals swear by the flat iron as a daily weapon in the battle against bad hair days.

The flat iron sadly was not always in our arsenal, but came into focus just before the turn of the century in 1872 by Parisian man named Marcel Grateau. Marcel used heated metal rods to style and straighten hair into the most popular styles which women deemed as the “Marcel Wave”.

It took over 3flat iron0 years for a major advance to come to the market, but in 1909 Isaac K. Shero invented the first hair straightener to use a flat surface rather than rods. Two flat irons were heated and pressed together to smooth out curls.

Just a few years later, the first hair straightener to resemble what we associate with today hit the stage courtesy of Scottish Heiress, Lady Jennifer Bell Schofield. This double plated heated iron was hinged in the center to clamp and unclamp from the hair.

Even after this invention, many women, in a desperate attempt to kill the curls, would lay their little heads down on their mother’s ironing tables and take a scalding and dangerous clothes iron to their hair. Most were helped in this seemingly insane task by their very own family. Thankfully, that method was swiftly carried away after the 1960’s and we moved forward with the Lady Jennifer’s design.

From there, well, the rest is history. Much like the hairdryer things became safer as the years passed by. Most straighteners on the market today are made with ceramic or steel plates and plastic handles. As you look into your cabinets today, be thankful for the many people who singed their locks so you could look fabulous!

Have a great hair day!

5 All-year Round Hair Tips

Master Hairdresser, Permanent Wave Specialist, and Colorist

1. Squeeze-dry your hair
GENTLY wring wsqueezing hair dry in a towel-300x261ater from your hair post shampooing & conditioning. Less friction results in less frizzing. To speed up drying time and prevent the use of excessive thermal heat, wring hair gently with paper towels to absorb more water before blow-drying.

2. Tend to your scalp not just your hair
Clarifying shampoos do not sufficiently cleanse womans-scalpproduct buildup on the scalp which can result in clogged hair follicles, weakened hair strands and slow hair growth. Apply an astringent to the scalp once a week with a cotton ball, then shampoo with professionally recommended shampoo and conditioner.

3. Wash your hair before receiving a color service
shampooing over a sink image2The colorist needs to see your actual hair color to determine successful desired results. Product buildup can make the hair look darker than what it really is and unwashed hair does not make the color take better – it can actually prevent hair color from processing effectively.

4. Do not over use “Protein” treatments or conditioners
protein hair treatment imageActual protein treatments or conditioners help to reinforce weak hair but should only be used when professionally recommended.Over use of “protein” on the hair can cause buildup resulting in dry, brittle hair and breakage.

5. Use a Humidifier (moist air)
humidifier imageDry air from either climate conditions or working in a building that pumps air (hot or cold) in can result in lifeless, flat, dry, and flyaway hair. Use professionally recommended moisturizing hair products and regularly run a humidifier to help put moisture back into the air.
