From hat hair to static electricity, split ends to dry frizz, when winter weather hits, a bad hair day can last an entire season. Hair typically gets 25 percent dryer during the winter. Even if you live in a moderate climate, you’re still susceptible to hair-raising changes as the seasons pass.
The environment can have some of the most damaging effects on hair in both summer and winter, but in winter it’s often worse because people generally don’t take as many precautions to protect their hair. Sun exposure (which can be as intense on a ski slope as it is on a beach) combined with blustery winter wind as well as snow, rain, and icy cold (which makes hair brittle and dry) can all come together to create some very bad winter hair days.
Even if you spend most of your time indoors, winter is still your hair’s enemy. Indoor heating can be something akin to spending an entire afternoon under a hair dryer. Honestly, it’s not quite as dramatic as the damage would be from that, but it certainly gives you an idea of what indoor heating can do to your hair. No matter what’s causing your winter hair woes, it is a fact the hair tends to become dry faster and have more breakage in the winter.
Here are 5 simple nourishing, replenishing and protective steps you can take for winter hair wellness ~
1. Make sure you are equipped with a high quality, salon professional shampoo and conditioner. The right shampoo and conditioner at this time of the year will help repair, seal and smooth your hair. A good hair mask is highly recommended once to twice a week for severely damaged hair. Davines SU/Mask https://dmazsalon.com/davines-su-hair-and-body-care/ or Davines Nounou or Minu Masks https://dmazsalon.com/retail-promotions/ are wonderful for winter stressed hair.
2. Avoid over-washing your hair in winter and in the shower. Try to wash it over the sink or tub with warm to cool water. The pressure of the shower head and the hot water causes the formation of tiny chinks in the surrounding cuticle which adds to the problems of hair dryness and breakage.
3. Towel-dry your hair very gently as aggressive rubbing roughs up the cuticle that can lead to breakage.
4. Professionally prescribed styling products are a must to help protect the hair from thermal styling and the environment. “Layering” your hair products individually and combing each through thoroughly can help achieve added protection, texture and shine. Direct warm (not hot) air from the blow dryer down the hair shaft to encourage the hair to lay flatter.
5. Plenty of water and good nutrition that incorporates small portions of all the key food groups such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources helps to nourish and protect hair. Taking a quality-grad multivitamin with essential B vitamins (B6, B12, folate), essential fatty acids and adequate minerals can help dry, weak hair prone to breakage in the winter. Have you heard of the clavicut? This current “beauty buzzword” describes mid-length, in-between hair, long bobs, and shoulder-length styles. The name comes from the fact that the longest layers of this type of cut graze the clavicle, and this collarbone-skimming style has become the hairdo of choice due to its functionality and ease. It’s been a long few seasons of bobs, lobs, swags, shags, etc. You may have opted for one of these styles, or seriously thought about it and decided to keep your long layers anyway. The Clavicut is a trend almost anyone can get behind; young or mature, growing out a shorter cut, or looking for a change to the same old “long”.
This style can be tailored to your face shape and hair type, although this length is great for anyone. Consider blunt edges for a more dramatic look, or soft layers to blend thicker textures. To make it more modern, opt for bangs with your clavicut for a statement look.
With this length; wearing your hair down won’t weigh you down and up-styles are still romantic. You will still have enough length to successfully air dry, without having a tangled mess or tons of flyaways – it is the perfect middle ground for easy styling and easy care. Although saying good-bye to your long locks might sound scary, this cut could be life changing, in the best way. Opt for a new outlook with this style and shed some of your inhibitions along with those inches. Call: (216) 292-4247 to schedule an appointment for your new look today!

Looking to switch up your look with a new haircut? The hottest cut still going strong is the “Swag”, which is short for Swingy-Shag. This is a fun take on the 70’s shag cut, and is a very versatile trend on any age. The Swag cut embraces natural texture while being fun & playful & “choppy” layers through the crown, and a more heavy weight line on the perimeter. This cut also plays well with fringe, and you can see from these pictures that the length of the cut can vary from shoulder length down to mid-chest.
You can opt to wear a center part with “curtain bangs” that frame the face nicely, or opt for a deep side parting and a side-swept bang. Either way the cut is youthful and a perfect transformation on any age.
To achieve this look, depending on your hair texture, a razor may be used or a slithering technique with scissors to cut the layers and fringe, for a more textured appearance, and to lighten the hair so it has that swingy bounce we are looking for. Once you have the Swag cut, keep your styling loose looking by prepping your hair with professional only hair products specifically recommended for your hair type & texture and then wrapping large sections of hair around a curling wand, for the perfect loose waves.
The “SWAG” is a versatile and hair color enhances this style. Rejuvenate you and your look. Don’t let your age to be the factor in your hairstyle choice ~ it is all about you and how you feel!
