The smell of lavender. Calming, soothing and beautifully fragrant. This is a popular flower and essential oil that is commonly found in most households. Diffusing lavender in the evening is a perfect way to unwind from a busy day, and especially before bed, can have an overall calming effect, relieve nervous tension and can help aid in sleep.

Lavender is particularly great for women who are suffering from PMS or going through menopause. The calming scent of lavender helps to support the nervous system which can help relieve tension, stress or anxiety to help minimize hair loss. It also has estrogenic properties, which can support healing from low estrogen, support a good nights rest or bring balance during menopause. Lavender also has a positive effect in relieving headaches, migraines, and depression.

You can also gain the benefits of lavender by making this delicious lavender infused lemonade. Sip on this herbal elixir all day and feel the calming benefits this amazing herb has to offer.

Ingredients:
• 1 liter fresh spring water
• 2-3 springs fresh or dried lavender
• 2 lemons, juiced
• 1 tbsp raw organic honey or maple syrup
Directions: Add all ingredients into a large jug and let sit in the fridge for 1 hour to allow the lemon and lavender to infuse the water. Feel free to add less or more sweetener, depending on your preference. Sip and enjoy!

By the time you reach 50, regardless of how your skin once was, it’s time for a cleansing review. You need a product that takes off surface oil, dirt, pollutants and make-up without removing the natural lipids. It should be a cleanser that emulsifies with water to refresh the skin, while leaving valuable moisturizing properties on its surface. This one simple change will improve your skin condition and, with this perfect balance, give you a beautifully hydrated skin even before you apply moisturizer.

Replace the exfoliating facial scrub. Scrubbing your skin will cause dryness, dullness and irritation. If you want a glowing, hydrated, luminous skin well into mid-life, find something containing alpha and or beta hydroxy acids and use it regularly.

Our skin changes as we age. By 50, it can lose its ability to hold moisture, thus leading to dryness, dehydration and a loss of elasticity. Look for creams with gamma linoleic and linolenic acids. These two essential fatty acids, when topically applied every day, mimic the skin’s natural lipid ceramide barrier and help to restore natural moisture without feeling greasy.

Winter Wellness for your Hair

Hair typically gets 25 percent dryer during the winter. Even if you live in a moderate climate, you’re still susceptible to hair-raising changes as the seasons pass.

The environment can have some of the most damaging effects on hair in both summer and winter, but in winter it’s often worse because people generally don’t take as many precautions to protect their hair. Sun exposure (which can be as intense on a ski slope as it is on a beach) combined with blustery winter wind as well as snow, rain, and icy cold (which makes hair brittle and dry) can all come together to create some very bad winter hair days.

static-hair-01Even if you spend most of your time indoors, winter is still your hair’s enemy. Indoor heating can be something akin to spending an entire afternoon under a hair dryer. Honestly, it’s not quite as dramatic as the damage would be from that, but it certainly gives you an idea of what indoor heating can do to your hair. No matter what’s causing your winter hair woes, it is a fact the hair tends to become dry faster and have more breakage in the winter.

Here are 5 protective and replenishing steps you can take.

hair-care-photo 1. Make sure you are equipped with a professional, salon quality shampoo and conditioner. The right shampoo and conditioner will help repair, seal and smooth your hair. A power infusion treatment is recommended once to twice a week for sever damaged hair.
2. Avoid over-washing your hair in winter and in the shower. Try to start washing it over the sink or tub with warm to cool water. The pressure of the shower head and the hot water causes the formation of tiny chinks in the surrounding cuticle which adds to the problems of hair dryness and breakage.
3. Towel-dry your hair very gently as aggressive rubbing roughs up the cuticle that can lead to breakage.
4. Professionally prescribed styling products are a must to help protect the hair from thermal styling. “Cocktailing” your products together can help achieve added protection, texture and shine. Direct air from the blow dryer down the hair shaft to encourage the hair to lay flatter.
5. Good nutrition, one that incorporates small portions of all the key food groups such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources helps to nourish and protect hair. Taking a quality-grad multivitamin with essential B vitamins (B6, B12, foliate), essential fatty acids and adequate minerals can help dry, weak hair prone to breakage in the winter.
